In traditional native culture, you are given a name at birth that is your "child name". When the time comes to become an adult, there are rites of passage, a crossing over. At that time, an elder looks into the essence of that person and "names" him or her in ceremony.
I am a person of mostly Celtic and some Cherokee blood who had the good fortune of spending about five years studying with a Shaman. This was an amazing time of healing and transformation for me. After a year of study, this Shaman looked into my essence, and gifted me with my name. It is my true name. It does me great honor to stand up in what it means and for my clients to respect it.
